Full Service on the 311 Cruise
I was handed a Kazoo as I entered the Palladium Ballroom on the Carnival Destiny on the first night of the 311 Caribbean Cruise. Being a jaded metal head, I begrudgingly accepted the kazoo and took my seat knowing only that I was about see Full Service from Austin, Texas. Full Service took the stage and the venue jumped to life, dancing to the unique mix of reggae, surf and hard rock.
The band had an impressive command of the stage. Is it possible to have four front men? Each member of the band is a stellar musician and performer. Guitarist Bonesaw shares vocal duties with drummer Hoag, while Smell drops in backing vocals and percussion, and Sean rocks a flawless bass groove.
Full Service were stars off stage as well. Bonesaw led a yoga session on the beach for the 311 cruisers. The band was always out and about enjoying everything the cruise had to offer and interacting with fans. They even hyped up the crowd during a gnarly game of Battleshots on the beach. Yeah, I said “gnarly”–I think the surf element has permanently rubbed off on my being. I must have picked up some new vocabulary during this back stage interview with Full Service before their first performance of the cruise, which they opened with “Rocketships.”
“But what about the kazoos!?” you ask. Well, at the end of that first performance at the Palladium, when the crowd’s energy was just about to peak, the band launched into “Trumpets.” Suddenly, the room was literally buzzing. Everyone whipped out their kazoos–yes, even me–and hummed along to the jam.
